Scope of Profession - Bricklayer

In this section,

  • “masonry” includes the following:
    • all types of bricks;
    • all types of blocks;
    • all types of stone, including cut and dressed stone;
    • structural tiles;
    • precast concrete components;
    • mortars;
    • waterproofing and damp‑proofing materials;
    • refractory systems and materials;
    • prefabricated panels constructed of any materials referred to in subclauses (i) to (viii);
  • “undertakings of the designated trade” means the erection, installation, repair and maintenance of masonry.

Undertakings and Activities

When practicing or otherwise carrying out work in the undertakings of the designated trade, the following are activities performed within the designated trade of the bricklayer:

  • erecting, installing, repairing and maintaining masonry; 
  • using detailed drawings, blueprints and other specifications;
  • using hand tools, power tools, levels and explosive actuated tools; 
  • using mixers, masonry saws and forklifts; 
  • using various mortars, units and accessories for bonding; 
  • using, setting up and assembling rigging and hoisting equipment, ladders and scaffolds; 
  • using any new innovative technological changes in the designated trade that relate to materials or methods of construction; 
  • laying masonry; 
  • installing anchoring systems;
  • placing steel reinforcing and grouts in cavities or cores; 
  • pointing and cleaning masonry; 
  • lining or relining chimneys, ovens, boilers and other vessels; 
  • lining or relining combustion chambers in fireplaces, furnaces and kilns; 
  • installing and caulking precast concrete products and prefabricated masonry panels; 
  • installing insulation, waterproofing and damp-proofing materials and air-vapour barriers.

Restricted Activities

The following activities, when performed within undertakings of the designated trade and by the specified classes of individuals, are restricted activities within the designated trade of bricklayer:

  • erecting, installing, repairing and maintaining masonry;
  • using detailed drawings, blueprints and other specifications;
  • using hand tools, power tools, levels and explosive actuated tools;
  • using mixers, masonry saws and forklifts;
  • using various mortars, units and accessories for bonding;
  • using, setting up and assembling rigging and hoisting equipment, ladders and scaffolds;
  • using any new innovative technological changes in the designated trade that relate to materials or methods of construction;
  • laying masonry;
  • installing anchoring systems;
  • placing steel reinforcing and grouts in cavities or cores;
